FREE Ground School – Aircraft General Knowledge
Elstree Helicopters Elstree Helicopters, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, United KingdomNext up is... Aircraft General Knowledge Tuesday 21st June at the usual time, from 18:00 - 20:00. As our seasoned Ground Schoolers will know, Aircraft General Knowledge will cover the 'nuts and bolts' of the aircraft.
For those joining us in person we will be heading out of the flying school and get the opportunity to get up close and personal with our R44 CGGG as Capt White takes us through a daily inspection (check A). For those joining us online, Capt. White will be coming to you via 'Capt Cam' as he GOES LIVE during the inspection.

Padstow Student Trip Summer 2022
Elstree Helicopters Elstree Helicopters, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, United KingdomJoin us as we head South West to Padstow, Cornwall. Landing at Rock we then transfer to the ferry by golf buggy before we head into Padstow for a well earned pasty or fish and chips by the harbour followed by an ice cream or cream tea. Take in the sea air as we stroll around the port and or for the more brave make your way down the beach and dip a toe in the water before heading back to the ferry and back to Elstree.
If you are currently learning to fly our student trips are great practise for navigation, straight and level flight and radio work as well of course as being jolly good fun! Already passed? These trips are a great excuse to use your PPL, hone your skills, hour build or just spend time with other pilots. Aircraft owners are also welcome to join us, the more the merrier!

FREE Ground School – Navigation
Elstree Helicopters Elstree Helicopters, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, United KingdomOn Tuesday 5th July we will be focusing on Navigation at the usual time 18:00 - 20:00 When flying as PIC (pilot in command), you also need to become a navigator too. It’s critical you are able to apply the correct practices to navigational tasks and developing your navigation skills is the very essence of flying solo, hence the importance of this section of the PPL(H) syllabus.

Le Touquet part deux Student Trip Summer 2022
Elstree Helicopters Elstree Helicopters, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, United KingdomOn Friday 8th July we heading back to France for Le Touquet part deux! What better way to use your piloting skills than flying yourself across the channel. Le Touquet is a popular destination with PPL holders and students as the trip provides some incredible opportunities to hone your piloting skills; planning, navigation, radio, crossing water and the list goes on.
If you’ve not been to Le Touquet before it’s located at the northern tip of France meaning it is easily accessible from the UK with some fabulous views along the way. The airport is only a short bike ride from the town (taxis are available) where you’ll find a beautiful beach and plenty of restaurants and shops. We will lunch at Le Matisse followed by a walk along the beach, browse the shops or grab ice cream for the brave! Once ‘fuelled’ we’ll head back to the airport and home to Blighty!

Isle of Wight Student Trip Summer 2022

Join us for this 'island hopping' experience, transiting through London zones southbound to Portsmouth, we leave the mainland and fly across the Solent to IOW. This is a superb introduction to flying over water and great for advanced training. During the trip we'll have the opportunity to circumnavigate this beautiful English Isle not forgetting of course the take in the famous Needles. A warm welcome awaits at Sandown EGHN where we will fuel both aircraft and pilots before heading back to Elstree.

On Tuesday 30th August it's our Quiz Night at our usual time of 18:00 - 20:00. As always, the quiz will be based on questions across the entire theoretical knowledge syllabus from ALPHA to ZULU!

FREE Ground School – Air Law
Elstree Helicopters Elstree Helicopters, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, United KingdomOn Tuesday 13th September we will be looking at Air Law from 18:00 - 20:00 In simple terms Air Law is a series of rules governing the use of airspace tends to be one of the first exams taken by student pilots as is a requirement prior to your first solo flight. Remember, much of Air Law is common sense and demonstrating good airmanship. Essentially the procedures are there for good reason and you need to prove that you understand them.

FREE Ground School – Principles of Flight

Principles of Flight at the usual time 18:00-20:00 Principles of Flight (POF) is best described as the science bit of the PPL course. This time we will refresh our knowledge of the fundamentals of helicopter flight physics, starting from the basics of the main rotor aerodynamics, Bernoulli Principle and flight control. Obviously we can't miss out our POF favourites; Vector force on rotors, Vortex ring including the 'Vuichard Technique' and Flat Back! We will also look at ground effect, autorotation and stability, and how all affect our in-flight decisions as a pilot.

Student Trip to Lake District Autumn 2022

Starting early on Wednesday we fly north through Luton Zone to Northampton, Althorp routing between Birmingham and East Midlands. On to Alton Towers via Jodrell Bank where we great a fabulous view of the Lovell Telescope. Through the Manchester CTR, Haydock Race Course and Blackpool to refuel. Following the coastline to Morecambe Bay and then The Lakes! We stop for a spot of 'afternoon tea' at Storrs Hall Hotel, situated on the edge of Lake Windermere...

FREE Ground School – Meteorology

Being able to anticipate the weather is akin to a super power for a pilot as will affect you, the aircraft and your operation. In this session we will focus F214, F215, Cloud Formations, Decoding TAFs and METARs and what to do if you are caught out by the weather.

Student Trip to Jimmy’s Farm Autumn 2022
Elstree Helicopters Elstree Helicopters, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, United KingdomFly with us to this super Suffolk sanctuary. Our first visit was back in 2015 and has since become a bit of a favourite with self fly hirers as a lunch destination with friends or family. Great route options either along the south east coast or cross country with of course the added bonus of the Farm/Wildlife Park to enjoy when you arrive! Great food available on site with a few shops including a butchers/farm shop should you want to take a slice of Suffolk home for tea.
