our fleet

So you’ve decided you want to learn to fly a helicopter… The next decision of course which one!

Globally, the most popular helicopter for flight training is still the Robinson R22 with the Guimbal rival the Cabri G2 coming a close second. This statistic is somewhat flipped at our flying school. The Hughes 300, also known as a Schweizer or Sikorsky S300C was once the go-to machine for training but it’s rare to find a UK flight school that still operates them. Some students prefer the R22’s big brother the R44 and a few go straight to turbine.

We have an impressive, well maintained fleet; Robinson family, Guimbal Cabri G2 and even a Bell 206BIII Jet Ranger so there’s plenty of choice for PPL(H) training and progression. There are of course various height and weight restrictions that may affect your choice of heli, budget may also have a bearing on your decision. But the best way to choose which helicopter is right for you is to ‘try before you fly’, our Head of Training will be able to help guide you through this process and find the perfect helicopter for you.

About the R22

The Robinson R22 is perfect for beginners and one of the Worlds most recognised training helicopters. The R22 is a two-bladed, two-seater, single-engine, light utility helicopter.

The R22 was designed in 1973 and has been in production ever since. Do not be fooled, this is by no means ‘old’ technology. The R22 remains a capable, highly manoeuvrable aircraft, which is fun to fly, a record other helicopters manufacturers have struggled to match.

What does Head of Training say about the R22?

The R22 is, in helicopter terms, pretty economical. It’s relatively inexpensive to learn to fly and similarly to purchase. They are incredibly reliable which means maintenance costs are also very low. Therefore makes it one of our more popular choices for students PPL(H) training.

Our most recent R22 HIZZ was literally bought from the sellers back garden (see pic). Built in the 90’s this 22 had plenty of show and GO! It’s gleaming Viper Blue Metallic livery with a marvel-esque silver thunderbolt and a pristine black leather interior it was certainly a head turner. Also after a little research it turns out we may have uncovered a ‘herbie-like’ heli as HIZZ had competed in several flying competitions.

Best thing about the R22

What’s the best thing about an R22? Well when you fly a 22 it really is back to basics and those principles of flight will be very apparent. It is a heli that must be flown and although some may see that as an R22’s weakness it’s what makes it so much fun

guimbal cabri G2

About the Cabri G2

The Guimbal Cabri G2 is a helicopter for the 21st century! This helicopter is a two-seater, light piston-engine helicopter designed by a former Eurocopter engineer. The Cabri G2 boasts a three-bladed, fully articulated main rotor and fenestron-type tail rotor. Its sleek styling and modern looks really makes it a supermodel of the helicopter world. This state-of-the-art, fast heli features a sophisticated glass cockpit and even an alarm and central-locking. With a TARDIS-like quality and is becoming more and more popular with PPL(H) students/owners across the board and a fierce competitor for its rival the Robinson R22.

What does Head of Training say about the G2?

We are fortunate to have 2 Cabri G2s in our fleet, both with our signature blue swoosh livery. G-FPEH (bonus points for those who can guess why we chose that callsign) was one of the first 100 manufactured and it was a real honour to collect it in person from the Guimbal factory in Aix-en-Provence and made for an amazing adventure bringing back to base crossing the Alps, quite a backdrop to complete my hours required to teach on this new machine.

Best thing about the Cabri G2?

The words that comes to mind are agile and safe. It’s has a sports car feel – nimble in the air yet steady in the hover and safe because (not that I don’t feel safe in other types) but the Cabri has no rotor mast bumping issues and therefore is more capable of coping with turbulence and low G. The panoramic view from the glass cockpit and central locking is a bit of a box ticker too!

robinson R44

About the R44

Based on its little brother the R22, the R44 is a four-seater, single-engine training helicopter. In production since 1990 this stunning aircraft was an 80’s invention and as such is unsurprisingly an absolute joy to fly. Since then the R44 has become the world’s most popular helicopter. With space for 4, this helicopter is smooth, fast and stable, with an excellent safety record. It’s great for trips with friends and family or hops across the channel.

What does Head of Training say about the R44?

Fast, smooth, powerful, agile are synonymous with this fabulous heli. The R44 is available in many configurations; floats, instruments, even different engines either carburetted or fuel injected. The carburetted version being extremely fuel efficient whereas the fuel injected option performs better at high altitudes and in the heat. It’s fully hydraulic which means no vibration or feedback through the controls which aides the smooth ride. Because of its incredible versatility, the R44 is the world’s most popular helicopter. Good for training, private owners and makes a great work horse from herding cattle to pipeline patrols. Our R44 HERZ with its millennial metallic Viper Blue livery and tan leather interior it certainly turns heads on the helipad.

Best thing about the R44?

It’s a perfect for self fly hirers looking to share their passion with friends and family and a new challenge for pilots post licence wanting to add a type rating to their flying portfolio. Flexible, reliable and a joy to fly you really get a lot of ‘Copter for your Cash’ this heli should be renamed the FANTASTIC 44!

bell 206 jet ranger

About the B206

The Bell 206 is a two-bladed, single engine, archetypal helicopter. Originally developed for the United States Army in 1962, this light utility aircraft is rugged and reliable. Although not called up for service, the B206 or Jet Ranger shifted into the private/commercial market due to its luxurious ride and fabulous safety record. The 60s produced many national treasures (The Beatles, the mini cooper, Julie Andrews) and the Jet Ranger is no exception and as seen on screen this 5 seater rotorcraft is synonymous with style and even today remains the world’s most popular turbine helicopter.

What does Head of Training say about the B206?

The Jet Ranger is not just a pretty face, because of its beginnings aimed at the military market it has an incredible safety record; rupture resistant fuel cells, shoulder harnesses and top of my list excellent autorotation characteristics. In fact it’s performance in auto is not dissimilar to a normal descent due to its high inertia rotor system. When you first sit in the B206 (Jet Ranger) you are immediately transported back to watching all those classic 80s TV shows & films. With a cockpit full of buttons (including overhead) and the turbine engine which sounds like a turbocharger on steroids, it is the archetypal heli. Smooth, roomy with conventional cyclic plus the added bonus of three full-size seats in the back, When you think helicopter you think of the Jet Ranger. Fully loaded as standard, you really do get a lot of helicopter for your money. It’s great for training and a fun, capable machine for private owners as it’s sedate qualities mean you don’t necessarily need to have quite the lightning reactions of a pilot that flies daily. Made in 1996, CLAY was one of the last 200 Jet Rangers to be built. Sporting a rather patriotic livery, this red, white and blue beauty it is the epitome of what a 206 should be and pretty nice to fly too!

Best thing about the Jet Ranger

It has become a true classic in every sense of the word, making you feel like a movie star every time you fly. The unmistakable roar of the turbine as you inject the fuel and watch the TOT rocket round to 800+C WOOHOO definitely a bucket list experience.
