Turbine Rating
For many helicopter pilots it’s the ultimate rotary aircraft. It’s powered by a gas turbine engine rather than a piston engine and makes all the right noises. They for the most part produce a greater power to weight ratio which is preferable as weight is always a penalty to performance and let’s be honest they are COOL!
Is a turbine rating for me?
For PPL(H)
The private pilot would enjoy the comfort of a turbine heli; bigger, smoother, potentially safer and with usually 5+ seats allowing plenty of room for family and luggage. Some students choose to gain their license in a turbine favouring the stability and ease of controls whereas PPL(H) holders will relish the challenge of adding a turbine to their flying portfolio.
For CPL(H)/ATPL(H)
Those planning a career in aviation, a turbine rating is essential. Most commercial operations use large turbines; AW169, AW139, B206, EC135 etc. flying for HEMS, off shore, search & rescue, charter, tour flights or even for drying cherries! Therefore a turbine rating increases your employability and skill set.
If you are adding a turbine to your existing ratings then you will need to undergo a first turbine conversion theory course which are conducted in-house.
If you are interested in adding a turbine rating to your license please call or email training@elstreehelicopters.co.uk
Proficiency Check
It is required by the CAA, that pilots complete a proficiency check (PC) annually to remain current on their chosen type(s). These checks are flown with an approved examiner and if (when) you pass, the examiner will endorse your rating with a new expiry date by signing the relevant section of your licence and entering the new date. For a rating to be validated it must be displayed on the front of your licence. Ratings on the back of your licence are not valid, regardless of any endorsements. Your examiner will then forward a copy of the examiner’s report from your PC.
If your rating has not yet expired, you can apply directly to take a Proficiency Check at an ATO to have your rating renewed, without having to take an assessment first. We would, however, advise you consider a refresher so that you are able to practise emergencies etc. particularly if you are not a frequent flyer. Please note, your medical certificate for the licence must also be current and valid.
